Book: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein

Coordinator: Michael Rupert
Attendees: Michael Rupert, Ed Stewart, Charlotte Anne, Kay Johnson, Wayne Ferguson,
DeVon Green

What we liked about this book: It’s hard for a story about an uprising of the proletariat not to
resonate right now. Heinlein’s “hard scifi” approach went over well with this audience. We were
also big fans of the sentient AI, “Mike.”

What we didn’t like: Heinlein’s decision to write in a clipped, “Lunar” dialect grated all of us. The
poor depiction of female characters was also a pretty big drawback for us, but we were careful
to take into account the fact that this was written in the 1960s and was probably considered a
fairly progressive characterization.

Verdict: Five thumbs up, one thumb sideways

Next Book Nominations:
Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde (400 pgs) - Charlotte Anne
Nona the Ninth (Locked Tomb Series #3) by Tamsyn Muir (496 pgs) – Ed Stewart
Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein (525 pgs) – Michael Rupert
A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers (160 pgs) – Wayne Ferguson
The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu (512 pgs) – Ed Stewart
